Abnormal Colorations and Defects Caused by Fungi

 
 
 Classification
False heartwood - Abnormal colorations of the log central area different from the normal color of the wood at wood species which normally are not developing heartwood. Fungal heartwood stains and streaks / Red heart - Red to brown-red coloration sometimes with a violet or grey-black shade, with unregulary outline different from the anually ring.
Beech star heart*) - Brown- to-red to grey-to-black coloration with star outline sometimes strongly delimited through dark lines. Fungal sapstains/Red coloration of resinous wood - Coloration in different shades of pink, pink- yellow, redish, red to red-brown, under stains and strips without determining the weakning of the wood or its rottenes.
Storage coloration*) - Total coloration of timber pieces in colors from light to black produced during the storage-drying time. Coloured sapstains - Coloration appearing at wet resinous wood mitigating through drying.
Blue stain - Blue coloration with grey and green shades. Mould - Fungus of different colors on timber piece surface.
Suffocated wood - Xilofag fungus alteration of wood. White marmored areas delimited by black lines. The wood resistence is affected. Sap rot / Decay - Profound change of color, resistence, consitency,  mechanical and phisical properties of wood due to the attach of xilofag fungus.
Soft sap rot / Advanced decay - Sap rot in advanced stage wood - britelling substance. Hard sap rot / Incipient decay - Sap rot when the wood keep his fiber structure.
