Structural Irregularities of Wood
Anatomic Elements Considered
Defects and Colorations

1. Slope of grain Deviation of wood fibers in a single plane with reference to longitudinally axle of timber piece.
2. Tangled grain *) Deviation in a not regulary manner of wood fibers.
3. Curly grain Deviation in a regulary manner of wood fibers in snaking lines form.
4. Curl Deviation of fibers and anually rings around the knots or healed wounds.
5. Compression wood Modification of resinous wood structure caracterized by tickening of the late wood area; the late wood becomes intensly coloured than the surrounding wood.
6. Tension wood Structure modification for deciduous wood  which became more compact as the surrounding wood. The wood aspect is fluffy after sawing.
7. Included sapwood Anually rings inside the heartwood with the sapwood colour and properties.
8. Inbark Fragments from tree' s bark included totally or partially in wood.
8.1 One sided inbark Inbark visible on one face of lumber/timber piece.
8.2 Through inbark Inbark visible on both faces of lumber/timber piece.
9 Pitch/resin pocket Cavity between anually rings filled with resin.
9.1 One side resin pocket Pitch pocket visible only on one face of lumber/timber piece.
9.2 Through resin pocket Pitch pocket visible on both faces of lumber /timber piece.
10. Resin imbued area *) Area from the lumber / timber piece strongly imbued with resin.
11. Wet area *) Area from the lumber / timber piece with moisture bigger that surrounding area. After drying this area shows shallow shakes and a darker color than the surrounding wood.
12. Marrow *) Heart
13. Sapwood *) Youngest part of the tree located at extremity of heartwood where the sap circulates.
14. Tanin stains Brown-rost to brown blue colorations with a depth of 2-5 mm, with aleatory forms caused by tanin oxidation from wood.
15. Frost crack coloration *) Red and black colorations without traces of desintegration in a longitudinally section, as narrow lines of 2-5 mm, sharpened at heads.
All terms without *)  are according to ISO 1029-1974, ISO 1031-1974, ISO 2299-1973 and ISO 2300-1973.
